2016 Mixed Pairs Competition

20160815_1632142016 Mixed Pairs Winners – Mrs D. Murphy and Doug Spear (left)
2016 Mixed Pairs Runners up – Mrs E. Williams and John Williams (Right)

A brilliant final with lots of support from the experts on the patio.

Liz and John were catching up and needing 5 shots to keep the match going, the shot of the day came from Daryth who put the jack into the ditch with her ‘toucher’ only about 1 foot away to finish the game – with her playing partner, Doug, smiling as always.

Hard luck to Liz and John Williams (no relation apart from both being fierce competitors) and many congratulations to Daryth Murphy and Doug Spear on taking the Mixed Pairs Trophy 2016 in such style.

Beechwood Bowls Club would like to thank Caerleon Sports for their sponsorship this season, its great to see local business supporting local clubs.

If any of our members have any equipment requirements in the future, please try and support our sponsors!

July 4th, 2016 – Update:

Its time to say a big thank you to this seasons main sponsors, SDC Technologies.
This seasons Club Captain Roland Simmonds managed to secure a healthy sponsorship sum from his employers, which enabled the club to finance new playing kit for our members.

_DSC7820a.jpg

“On the back of a great season last year, which saw the club promoted after finishing Runners Up in the division, we as a club wanted to continue that success, and try and become more professional both on and off the green. We have been lucky enough to secure sponsorship from a few sources this season, which has allowed us to update our playing kit, and buy some extra training equipment as we look to grow our membership and hopefully recruit some younger players into the club” said Mr Simmonds

We would like to thank SDC Technologies for their generosity as we strive to make Beechwood Bowling Club a healthy club that we can all be proud of.

However we did have a very happy Beechwood bowler who won a bottle of red wine in the raffle (fifteen minutes of fame comes to mind).

It is always a pleasure to visit Chepstow Bowling Club (as it is with all bowling clubs) because of their friendly welcome and sporting approach to the game.

NBA League

Wednesday evening saw us travel the short distance over to Caerleon for our NBA League fixture. Caerleon are currently top of the NBA League, and it was easy to see why, a strong line up winning all 4 rinks on the night.
It was nice to see a few of Beechwoods newest members out on the green though, a chance for them to get used to playing in competitive games.

As always, we would like to thank Caerleon for their hospitality, and wish them best of luck for the rest of the season!

July 19th, 2015 – Update:

DSC_0129Its been a busy weekend for Beechwood Bowls Club, back to back games in the MBA League, at home to Llanwern on Saturday, finishing with todays game at Garndiffaith.

Saturdays game was always seen as a tricky fixture, Llanwern share the green up at Beechwood, so both teams know the rinks very well. It was Beechwood that made the early running though, and managed to stay on top for the whole match, comfortable winners in the end and taking 12 valuable league points.

Final score: Beechwood 88 – 55 Llanwern

Sundays fixture saw us travel 13 miles north, but it wasn’t to be an unlucky number as once again Beechwood made a great start to the fixture. The green at Garndiffaith was a little heavy to start, not surprising after some heavy morning rain, but it soon dried out and bowled very well. A special mention to whoever takes care of the green up there, its in immaculate condition, well done.

Once again Beechwood managed to keep the early form going, and were rewarded with another 12 league points, winning 3 of the available 4 rinks.

Final Score: Garndiffaith 55 – 101 Beechwood

We would of course like to thank Garndiffaith for their very warm welcome and great hospitality, and of course wish both them and Llanwern the best for the rest of the season.

Over Sixties League

Our opponents on Tuesday were Croesyceiliog, a team consistently at the top of the league every year. With our home advantage we were confident of a strong performance. Starting well and leading in two of the three rinks after tea (which was commented on by one of the senior bowlers as being very good) we were unable to hold on and went down by 16 shots by the finish of the game. Maybe it was the tea!

No raffle prizes either.

Croesyceiliog take the bulk of the points, 8-2

Final Score: Beechwood 47 – 63 Croesyceiliog

July 12th, 2015 – Update:

It was back to winning ways in the MBA League for Beechwood Bowls Club yesterday, as we look to get ourselves back into the promotion places. 4 rinks were played out, Beechwood winning 3 and losing 1.

12 league points better off keeps it tight at the top, Beechwood still with that extra game in hand over those in first and second places.

We would like to thank Rogerstone for yesterdays warm welcome and great hospitality, and of course we wish them all the best for the rest of the season.

It was a nailbiting finish in last nights game, as Beechwood welcomed Firbank Bowls Club to the green. 4 rinks battled it out and honours were even with both sides winning 2 rinks each, but it was Beechwood who take the game, and the bulk of the points, winning the last end by a big enough margin to secure 10 league points.

Final Score: Beechwood 65 – 64 Firbank

Another game played in great spirits, and of course we wish Firbank all the best for the rest of the season!

Over Sixties League

The Over sixties team were on the road for their latest match, Whiteheads were the opponents, and on a blustery warm afternoon the boys performed really well (including two guest players from Llanwern).

Leading for almost the entire game we were caught on the last end to lose by 2 shots overall. This was a good performance, winning on two rinks and coming away with four points out of the possible ten.

As to the raffle, a bottle of rosé wine was won by one of our bowlers (a non wine drinker) who suddenly became very popular….

Final Score:  Whiteheads 62 – 60 Beechwood

July 6th, 2015 – Update:

Its been a difficult start to the month of July for Beechwood Bowls Club, a defeat last week in the NBA to Whiteheads knocking us from the top of the table, Beechwood were hoping to get back to winning ways on the weekend, with an MBA League fixture versus Ynysddu.

Sadly, it wasn’t to be. 4 rinks were played out, Beechwood managing victory on just one rink. Ynysddu taking home the bulk of the league points 12-2.
The game was played in great spirits, and of course we wish Ynysddu the best of luck for the rest of the season (until we meet again…)

Final Score: Beechwood 73 – 100 Ynysddu

4 rinks were played out, and it was victory for Whiteheads across the board, winning all 4 rinks earning themselves all 14 of those precious league points.

Final score : Whiteheads 78 – 51 Beechwood

Beechwood would like to wish Whiteheads all the best for the rest of the season

Beechwood Bowls Club met Llanwern in tonights NBA League game, Llanwern of course also share the green here at Beechwood Park.

Beechwood are unbeaten in the NBA League so far this season, so were looking to build on that great start and maintain their 100% record.

They were not disappointed, rinks were shared with 2 wins each, but a big sway in shots difference meant that Beechwood take the bulk of the league points, 10-4.

Well done to all bowlers, and of course we wish our friends at Llanwern the best of luck for the rest of the season!

Over Sixties League

Another warm sunny day for our home encounter with our closest neighbours St Julians Bowling Club. Two of our new members were included into the team for this match, but unfortunately we were overwhelmed by a very good side on the day, and sadly for the second week running, came away with no league points.

We didn’t even win on the raffle either….

A quick thanks to Standard Bowls Club for our friendly match on the weekend, 4 rinks were played out, and thankfully the rain held off as we enjoyed our Saturday afternoon on the green.

As always a warm welcome and plenty of humour shared throughout the game, with Standard Bowls Club coming out on top of this one.

The MBA League latest table has also been released, and with Beechwood on a free week, it was good to see us still topping the table, although only just….

At the half way stage there were just 2 points in the game, but it was St Julians that finished the better side in the later stages, overall winners with a final score of 69-54.

Beechwood would like to take this opportunity to wish St Julians all the best for the next round.

Beechwood were back at home this afternoon, Standard Bowls Club the opponents in our Monmouthshire Bowling Association fixture. It was never going to be an easy game, and with the rain threatening to fall all afternoon, it was good to see the game progress uninterrupted.

4 rinks were played out, and honours were shared with both sides winning 2 a piece. Beechwood continued with their ‘never say die’ attitude though, taking the bulk of the points 10-4 with an overall victory of 81-75.

All rinks were played out in good spirits, lots of familiar faces to both sides, and we wish all at Standard Bowls Club the best for the rest of the season.

Next up for Beechwood is the Terry Youngston Knockout Cup, taking place this coming Wednesday, with 2 rinks at home, and 2 rinks to be played away.

Today saw Beechwood Bowls Club travel up the valleys, Nantyglo our destination for our MBA league match. The weather did manage to stay dry for us, although a heavy crosswind at times did seem a little distracting.

Nantyglo seemed to start the better side, but it was Beechwood that improved, and by the end of the afternoon came out eventual winners with a scoreline of 79-76.

Beechwood would like to thank all at Nantyglo for their hospitality, and we look forward to their visit later on in the season.

They didn’t disappoint either, Beechwood once again taking the win and the bulk of those precious points with a 74-63 win, securing 10 of the 14 available league points.

The game was as always, played out in great spirits, and we wish our friends at N.A.C. all the best for the rest of the season.

May 30th, 2015 – Update:

Well, its been a busy few days for Beechwood Bowls Club, starting with a Friday night Cup Game away at Cross Keys. It was always going to be a difficult fixture for Beechwood, and as expected Cross Keys progress to the next round, winning 3 of the 4 rinks on the night.

On to Saturday then, and it was a Battle of the Front Runners as Ebbw Vale Welfare made their way down to Beechwood Park, the only team currently standing between Beechwood and the top of the league.

No longer is that the case though, Beechwood winning 3 of the 4 rinks and amassing enough points to win the game outright 75-71.5 and of course taking 12 of those all important league points, catapulting themselves into top place.

Well done to all players that took part in the last few days bowling, and of course we wish both Cross Keys and Ebbw Vale Welfare the best of luck for the rest of the season!
